Vote now in the Webware 100 2009!

We’re finalists in CNET’s Webware 100! The polls are open now, so go vote for your favorite location-based service — we’re hoping it’s us, of course!

We’re up against some great services, but outside.in is doing something that nobody else does: sharing the news around you, on a hyperlocal level. As newspapers around the country are folding, media companies are scrambling to find solutions to continue their local coverage. Our platform and local content are a clear answer, that is “so localized [it] almost makes you want to shut your blinds.”

Vote for us in CNET's Webware 100!

StoryMap Roundup: Big, Medium, New

Let’s recognize some publishers who put up StoryMaps recently.  I find this roundup to be particularly interesting because of its diversity.  Apparently, publishers of all sizes have good reason to put a map on their site.

MyFoxBoston: They put a nice, large StoryMap on their homepage. Aside from the benefit of being able to zoom in and find stories in certain neighborhoods, I love the macro perspective that MyFoxBoston’s StoryMap displays.  With a quick glance, you can see that their writers are producing a very high volume of content all over Metro Boston as far west as Chicopee, MA, up into New Hampshire, and south to Milton, MA in just the past two weeks. Frequently, you’ll see stories out on the Cape as well.  The StoryMap gives the reader a thorough sense of where news is happening with minimum effort.

Sojourn Star Blogs: SojournStar Music has created an industrious network of sites that covers the music scene in Richmond, VA.  I’m really impressed by their community building.  Check out their sites below to understand what I’m talking about.

ThisBarSucks: But this blog doesn’t! Matt at This Bar Sucks does an excellent job at finding bars in Manhattan and Brooklyn and writing thorough reviews on them.  He also accepts user reviews.  So, if you’ve been to a bar that you like in Manhattan or Brooklyn, write about it and send it to Matt@ThisBarSucks.com. Who knows? Maybe you’ll become a famour bar blogger. Those of you know what New York is like in the nice weather know that Matt’s site could prove to be an invaluable resource in the coming months.

San Jose Has A Blog: And a mighty fine one at that.  The coverage of San Jose, CA is excellent, but what’s really impressive is the photography.  Apparently, they have really great taste in picking out photographs from the interwebs.*  With regards to design, San Jose Has a Blog is setting the standard for online news sites in their region.
